the Glycemic Index

Can you have a sensible weight loss plan following the glycemic index
and stop failing diets?

Well, sensible is defined as "practical" and "showing good sense". So,
a sensible weight loss plan must show good sense and be practical
enough for you to incorporate into your lifestyle.

Now, you may ask, what has glycemic index got to do with sensible
weight loss? Well, everything. Glycemic index was developed to help
diabetics select foods that better controlled their blood glucose
levels.

We also found out that foods that better control sugar levels have the
beneficial effect of reducing your urge to eat frequently and therefore
excessively. The practical outcome of eating less is less calories
and less weight.

Knowing the glycemic index of the foods you like and eat will allow you
to feel better and also lose weight. It can help you stop
failing diets.

What is the Glycemic Index (GI)?

Simply put, GI is a calculation that assigns a number to foods
and ranks their impact on an individual's blood sugar level. Up to 55
is considered low, 56 to 69 is considered medium and anything above 69
is considered high.

Glycemic Index Ranking

High

70 and greater

Medium

56 to 69

Low

55 and less

In general, eating a greater portion of foods with lower GI is better
than eating higher GI foods.

GI Impact on Weight Loss

How? You may ask. Well, foods having high GI results in causing a rapid
and a generally short lived rise in the blood glucose level in the
body.

The significance of this is that it can leave you, after the initial
sugar rise in the system wears off, feeling tired and often hungry
relatively soon after eating.

Worse, it can lead to overeating in order to provide the body with
additional energy and to satisfying the feeling of hunger. As we all
know, overeating is one of the greatest cause of obesity and weight
gain.

On the other hand, foods having a lower glycemic index provide the body
with a more steady and even supply of energy.

Unlike higher GI foods, lower GI foods will leave you feeling satisfied
longer and not hungry. In addition, it will provide you greater energy
longer.

More importantly, since your body feels less hungry, you are less
likely to constantly feel the need to eat more and go back for
leftovers and indulge in useless calorie laden snacking. Reducing the
amount of extra food you eat during the day can definitely help you
quite a bit in losing weight.

How to Sensibly Use Glycemic Index to Lose Weight

The human body is designed to do its best when it has a constant and
steady supply of energy.

Knowing the GI of various foods will allow you to be in a better
position to select foods that reduce the harmful impact on your weight
of high and sudden increase and decrease of sugar in the system. You
can now focus on the beneficial impact of lower GI foods instead.

If you manage to successfully eat lesser amounts of higher GI foods and
more of the lower GI foods, you will have a better sense of feeling
satisfied with your food and not feel as hungry as you would have
otherwise. Without those hunger pangs constantly nagging at you, not
only will you lose weight, you will feel better and more energetic to
do things that can make a difference in your life, and finally stop
failing on your diets.
